Pages to Projects ~ The Dot

This week at Pages to Projects we read “The Dot” by Peter Reynolds. This is one of my favorite stories. It proves the fact that every child is an artist!

For our project we used contact paper and drew two big dots on it. We filled our dots with finds from our scavenger hunt outside for nature items. After we had everything placed to our liking, we placed another piece of contact paper over our items. We then cut out our dots and placed them in mason jar rings and hung them with yarn. Makes for a beautiful nature display or sun-catcher for your windows!!

Join us for our next Pages to Projects on December 5th at 3:30!

Royal Grammar School Chained Library

Though chained books may seem like an alien (and perhaps even horrifying) idea, chained libraries were the norm for centuries.

Why?

Well, let me put it this way: It took you years to meticulously handwrite and bind a book. Every copy of every volume you wanted your library to have would require you to either make it yourself from scratch, and by hand, or to break out the big bucks to buy it from someone who had done that work for you.

As such, books were super expensive.

To give you an idea of how expensive, 7 books in 1479 cost about £5

In 1751 (slightly over 270 years later, when the pound was worth less£5 was more or less equivalent to £1,005

So it was even more expensive in 1479.

This is super interesting!! Chained libraries were the norm for centuries!! Can you imagine that today?? Books use to take years to hand write, no wonder they were chained….a book back in 1479 cost 5 euros or around 6 us dollars!! Whoah!!
