This year’s art show was amazingly beautiful…….
What a wonderful art year here at the Mulberry Public Library. We ended our year with a fantastic art display that the community came to and enjoyed. Art was hanging from trees, limbs and the ceiling! Don’t forget to join us in September as we start new programming!! Come art with us!! 🙂

2017 has been a busy year so far. Pages to Projects is going very well. We have continued to make amazing art based on awesome books! Some of those include:

 One of my favorite things about Christmas is decorating my Christmas tree!! For Pages to Projects this month I picked the book, Mr. Willowby’s Christmas Tree. This is a cute story about a tree that is big enough for the whole neighborhood, including the animals! All you have to do is take a little off the top!
For our project we made Christmas banners out of Muslin cloth. Only thing that was required was it had to have a Christmas tree on it!
I pre-cut the banners our of the Muslin cloth, I bought 3 yards for 16 banners.
The kiddos dyed the cloth with liquid watercolors in red and green. After they dried a tad, Â we then used cookie cutters dipped in paint to add designs to the cloth. Of course Christmas is not complete without glitter, so glitter paint was added! The kiddos then strung jewelry wire with bead and colored pasta to add a hanger to the banner and Voila!

This week at Pages to Projects we read “The Dot” by Peter Reynolds. This is one of my favorite stories. It proves the fact that every child is an artist!
For our project we used contact paper and drew two big dots on it. We filled our dots with finds from our scavenger hunt outside for nature items. After we had everything placed to our liking, we placed another piece of contact paper over our items. We then cut out our dots and placed them in mason jar rings and hung them with yarn. Makes for a beautiful nature display or sun-catcher for your windows!!

This week at Pages to Projects we read, Not a Stick, by Antoinette Portis. This is a cute little story about a Pig and his stick. But is it just a stick? Not if you use your imagination!!
Our project to go along with this awesome book was stick sculptures. We set out all sorts of goodies to make our stick sculptures with. Colored pasta, beads, pine cones, yarn, paint and glitter.
The kids chose 2 sticks out of our stick basket and then painted them a variety of colors. Once both sticks were painted we used jewelry wire to wrap one end of both sticks together. They then added beads and pasta to the jewelry wire. When they had the wire strung to their liking we wrapped them around the sticks and tied them off. We also secured the ends with yarn by wrapping it around both sticks. Glitter paint was then added for sparkle of course!! The results were beautiful!!

Today’s STEAM Art was a little spooky! We learned about Edvard Munch, the painter of The Scream…..
He was a very interesting fellow to learn about. Raised by his father and told vivid ghost stories as a child he became a very dark artist. Since it is the Halloween season, I thought it was a perfect time to recreate this awesome painting.
The kiddos started by drawing an out line of the scene with pencil. We used oil pastels to color our beautiful backgrounds. After our background was done we put a black watercolor wash on them and then glued our “scream” photos to them! They turned our awesome. Kiddos did an amazing job!

This week at Pages to Projects we read “Leaf Man” by Lois Elchert
Inspired by his amazing leaf artwork in the pages of the book we ran outside to explore nature. Frames and mirrors in hand we set out to make some awesome nature photos.
The kiddos did amazing!! I am very impressed with the photos that they put together! Best part about this day was being outside in nature and enjoying the weather and company. A celebration of life!!!
After School Adventures was awesome this week as we celebrated Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead! A Mexican celebration of loved ones passed. We started our celebration by sharing stories of our loved ones we have lost. I shared a story of my grandma who passed away 6 years ago and one of our lovely patrons shared a story of her sister that passed away. We watched a video about the meaning of the Day of the Dead and then we got to crafting. I pre-cut clay sugar skulls for the kids to decorate.
The kiddos decorated cardboard backgrounds with paint and painted paper and then glued their sugar skulls on. The colors were vibrant and their work was amazing!!

This week Pages to Projects was all about Native American lore and legends. We read the story of the dream catcher legend as follows:
After our short story we got busy on making our own Dream Catchers. We used embroidery hoops and masking tape for our hoops. Yarn for our web. And lots of yarn and beading for our hangings.
Nearly every part of a dream catcher had a meaning.
In more modern times makers have added other items to dream catchers.
This was a fun project! I had many of the kids to say it was their favorite! Join us every other Monday for Pages to Projects!! Hope to see you there!!
